Report Migration from Metabase to Power BI

This bachelor thesis focuses on the migration of an entire fintech company’s reporting system between the Metabase and Power BI platforms. The main objective is to migrate the reports to the new platform and document the entire process. Author first introduces the topic of Self-Service Business Intelligence and then outlines the migration methodology that guides the entire project. Following the “Plan, Migrate, Validate” methodology, the author first analyzed the current state, the new platform, and the project’s time requirements, based on which he developed a migration plan. He then migrated 117 reports to the Power BI platform, including their publication to production and the transfer of users, along with their training. In addition, the author addresses the testing and documentation of the entire process in the thesis and ultimately evaluates it. According to the analysis, the project was expected to take 69 man-days, or half a year. After 6 months, the migration was more than 90% complete, and the remaining reports, along with the rest of the users, were migrated over the next three months due to other projects, thereby completing the migration. This thesis provides detailed insight into each phase of the project and compiles the author’s experience in this field into a single document.
