Abstract:
This bachelor’s thesis examines how generational differences in the workplace may influence the individual performance of an employee. The research addresses three sub-questions: whether work values differ across generations, how these differences shape and refine motivation and behavior, and how they are perceived to influence performance outcomes. A mixed-methods approach was applied, including and combining 32 responses and eight semi-structured interviews with employees from different industries and of different seniority levels. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while the qualitative data were coded using thematic analysis following the framework suggested by Braun and Clarke (2006). The findings show that respondents perceive generational differences as real and meaningful, with younger employees consistently associated with technological adaptability and career mobility; meanwhile, older employees are associated with reliability, accumulated experience, and organizational loyalty. However, respondents themselves frequently qualified these patterns as tendencies rather than rules, with individual personality, industry context, and life-stage factors moderating the extent to which generational characteristics translate into actual workplace behavior. This study contributes a structural-economic framing of generational composition, in which workforce age structure reflects a company’s tolerance to turnover. The findings suggest that managers should treat generational categories as a background signal rather than a basis for individual evaluation and decisions.
