Abstract:
This thesis analyzes the multi-faceted integration of innovation and sustainability in the BMW, MINI, and Alpina brands of the BMW Group and how innovation adds to the sustainability work of the Group. Addressing a qualitative-dominant case study incorporating two written expert interviews with retail staff and a survey with an N=140, and located within the frameworks of the Natural-Resource-Based View, green-innovation literature and corporate-sustainability-management, the findings of this study demonstrate that innovation and sustainability are integrated and regarded as a single agenda, which includes the electrification, the decarbonization of production, and the circular economy. The agenda is shared across the three brands and is expressed in variant forms, which are: the technological leadership and long-term hydrogen pathway of BMW, the moderated all-electric vision of MINI, given the low demand, and the absorption of Alpina into the Group as regulatory pressure rendered its independence impossible. The strongest finding was the existence of a communication and credibility gap. Retail staff said customers do not see sustainability efforts, while the survey shows low trust and awareness, a significant value-action gap, and the most greenwashing as the most evident brand. This study shows that for the BMW Group flexibility of innovation and sustainability is more about the unification of technological advancement and trust, regulation, infrastructure, and demand than ability.
