| Abstract: | The existing body of research highlights the importance of successful change management in today’s globalized and dynamic business environment. However, the exact underlying mechanisms, determining company success or decline in dynamic environments, are less clear. The highly innovative and increasingly prominent videogame industry (VGI) offers a valuable context for exploring such mechanisms. Threat rigidities may provide an explanatory mechanism for why certain firms experience competitive decline in dynamic environments. The aim of this thesis is to examine whether threat rigidity theory provides a consistent explanation for the competitive struggles faced by the French videogame company Ubisoft Entertainment. To this end, the thesis undertakes a longitudinal case study research design, utilizing a multimodel approach combining the Strategy Palette and Birkinshaw model frameworks, together with financial analysis and Balanced Scorecards (BSC) methodology. The main findings of this work provide supporting evidence for the existence of a threat-rigidity mechanism, hindering Ubisoft’s strategic adaptability and gradually worsening its organizational fit with VGI’s environmental characteristics. By expanding the application of threat rigidity theory to VGI research, this work contributes to the existing literature while also offering practical managerial implications for companies operating in creative and dynamic industries. |

| Abstract: | Dosavadní výzkum zdůrazňuje význam úspěšného řízení změn v dnešním globalizované a dynamické ekonomice. Nicméně, přesné mechanismy, které v dynamických prostředích určují úspěch či úpadek společností nejsou dostatečně objasněné. Vysoce inovativní a stále rostoucí odvětví videoher (VGI) nabízí cenný kontext pro hlubší průzkum těchto mechanismů. Rigidita manažerských struktur v reakci na existenční hrozby může představovat mechanismus vysvětlující, proč se některé firmy v dynamických prostředích vyznačují poklesem konkurenceschopnosti. Cílem této práce je prozkoumat, zda Threat Rigidity Theory poskytuje konzistentní vysvětlení postupného konkurenčního úpadku francouzské videoherní společnosti Ubisoft Entertainment. Pro tento účel práce využívá výzkumný design na bázi longitudinální případové studie, využívající modely Strategy Palette, Birkinshaw Model, detailní finanční analýzu a metodiku Balanced Scorecards (BSC). Hlavním závěrem této práce je poskytnutí důkazů podporujících existenci mechanismu předloženého teorií rigidity manažerských struktur v reakci na existenční hrozby. Tento mechanismus poskytuje konzistentní vysvětlení pro ztrátu strategické adaptability společnosti Ubisoft, negativně ovlivňující její organizační soulad s enviromentální charakteristikou dnešního videoherního odvětví. Aplikací Threat Rigidity Theory v oblasti studií videoherního odvětví tato práce přispívá k existující literatuře a zároveň nabízí cenné manažerské implikace pro společnosti operující v kreativních a dynamických odvětvích. |
