Abstract:

Abstract:
Japan a country with one of the fastest aging populations. The relatively high proportion of older people in the population represents a new challenge for the Japanese health care to maintain an adequate health care for the elderly. One possibility is to adopt new Internet of Things technologies for the care of the elderly. The main goal of this diploma thesis is to evaluate to which extent the Internet of Things devices have been used in health care for the elderly population in the last decade. In terms of secondary objectives, I examine what effects projects applied in the last decade in selected Japanese cities that implement the smart city strategy have, and furthermore how those contribute to solving negative social consequences of an aging population, which Japan faces. I chose the cities Kashiwanoha (Chiba Prefecture), Aizuwakamatsu (Fukushima Prefecture) and the capital of Japan Tokyo (Tokyo Prefecture). The conclusion of the work is that the Japanese health care system is developing technologies that check the health status of seniors and help them with daily activities and stay active. These technologies that are being developed in Japan are in form of wearables and robotics and support seniors to have an independent life. In the selected cities, there are many initiatives that ease the active aging of its population and the adoption of preventive care. Residents can use various health facilities to check their health status and learn how to take care of their health.
