Academic integrity management in the era of generative AI: An integrated model of factors contributing to unethical student behavior

The habilitation thesis proposes and empirically verifies an integrated model explaining the unethical use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) by students, which links the situational-motivational framework of the Diamond of Deception (ability, opportunity, motivation, rationalization) with the dispositional predictor of Intellectual Humility. A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted online on a sample of 290 university students and analyzed using the PLS-SEM method. The key results confirm a robust sequential chain from perceived opportunity (OPO) through motivation (MOT) and rationalization (RAT) to intention (INT) and action (ACT), with OPO being the dominant predictor of MOT and simultaneously reinforcing RAT. The model achieves satisfactory predictive power and explains 37.9% of the variance in action (ACT). Among dispositional factors, the protective effect of intellectual and ego independence (IH-EGO) is demonstrated, which reduces both motivation and intention to use GenAI unethically, while openness to revising one's opinion (IH-OPEN) paradoxically increases motivation. Furthermore, a positive relationship between respect for the opinions of others (IH-RESP) and rationalization is evident. The analysis further confirms the moderating effect of IH-OPEN, which dampens the relationship between capability (CAP) and perceived opportunity (OPO). The study thus recontextualizes the Diamond of Deception for the GenAI era, integrates dispositional and situational determinants of behavior, and implies a shift from detection to prevention: redesigning assessments that limit opportunity, cultivating critical AI literacy, and developing intellectual virtues as part of the academic integration of GenAI.
