This dissertation focuses on a comparative analysis of the economic consequences of the break-up of the Soviet Union for Russia and Ukraine during the period 1991–2014. The aim of the thesis is to test the hypotheses that, despite relatively similar starting conditions, the development of the Russian Federation and Ukraine following the collapse of the USSR differed primarily due to differences in the economic reforms implemented, the institutional framework and external factors, and also that the growth of the Russian economy after 2000 was largely the result of high oil and gas prices, rather than structural reforms, which led to a dependence on raw material exports. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the characteristics of the USSR’s economic system and the causes of its collapse, as well as on the transformation process and the economic systems of the Russian Federation and Ukraine following the collapse of the USSR. The practical part of the thesis presents a comparative analysis of the economic systems and economic development of Russia and Ukraine between 1991 and 2014. The main conclusions of this thesis show that, although both states had similar institutional foundations, their economic development differed significantly precisely as a result of differing economic reform strategies, differing institutional environments and external shocks. Based on the research carried out and the comparison of data, both hypotheses were confirmed. Ukraine found itself caught in a cycle of incomplete reforms, political instability and dependence on external factors; the Russian Federation, by contrast, managed to stabilise and ensure the growth of its economy through the centralisation of power and the export of energy resources, which confirms that its growth was not based on structural reforms. The contribution of this work lies in a comprehensive comparative analysis of the economic consequences of the collapse of the USSR for both countries, focusing on the role of institutional and external factors, and it contributes to an understanding of the differences in the economic development of post-Soviet countries.
