Cycling as an Element of Sustainable Mobility: Prospects for Implementing the Dutch Model in Prague

This diploma thesis examines the possibilities and limitations of transferring the principles of the Dutch cycling infrastructure model to the specific environment of the capital city of Prague. The aim of the thesis is to assess the applicability of this foreign approach and propose solutions that reflect local conditions. The thesis first analyzes the systematic approach adopted in the Netherlands, where cycling is a natural part of everyday mobility. It then examines the situation in Prague, where the development of cycling infrastructure is constrained by the spatial limitations of the historic urban environment. It also identifies perceived safety and fear of motor traffic as key factors limiting cycling, resulting from a mismatch between users' needs and the city's infrastructure. The analysis of transferability shows that the full implementation of the Dutch model is not realistic. However, the gradual implementation of locally adapted projects—illustrated by the case study of the cycle path along the Nupaky–Prague-Benice– Prague-Uhříněves corridor—represents a feasible approach. The thesis also emphasizes the importance of integrating cycling with public transport to address first- and last-mile connectivity. Finally, it concludes that, alongside infrastructure improvements, changing public perceptions is essential for the further development of urban cycling in Prague.
