Possibilities of Renovation Functionalist Coffee Houses in Brno

This bachelor's theses main focus is on cafes in Brno, which were built during the interwar period of the First Republic in the functionalist style. It examines the present state of these cafes as well as their history from the First Republic to the present. A rise of interest in the buildings of modern architecture from the early twentieth century can be observed in the last few years, both from expert and general public. In connection with this, a rational interest is growing for the functionalist cafes, many of which have been recently renovated and reopened. This work is focused on the motives that lead investors to restore these monuments, as well as ways of their recovery. Given the circumstances and the current economic situation, it is not often in the financial capacity or in the investors will to recover cafes in their original form. However, it is possible, at least partially, to restore the genius loci of these places, mainly thanks to the personal interest of owners and investors. The former atmosphere of the café can only be achieved if the main goal isn't profit alone, but also an effort to restore it as a monument as such, only then it will be more than mere gastronomic establishment in an otherwise architecturally valuable building. In context of repairs and reconstruction of these objects, my work analyzes the issues connected to conservation of architecture from the early twentieth century. I will use available literature and interviews with owners and operators of some renewed functionalist cafes, as a main source of information to write this thesis.
