Impacts of China's development aid and investment in Africa, focusing on Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2000-2015

| Abstract: | Bakalářská práce se ve své první části věnuje rozvojové pomoci obecně, předkládá její definici a především analyzuje vývoj různých postojů, které k ní byly v minulosti zaujímány. Toto teoretické pozadí představuje nezbytnou součást ke hledání dalších efektivnějších přístupů, neboť obecně lze konstatovat, že dosavadní pomoc ze strany Západu v tomto záměru selhala. Práce se tak dále zabývá jinými alternativami rozvojové spolupráce, které by mohly být schopné miliardu nejchudších vymanit z chudoby.
Druhá část se pak zabývá výhradně rolí Číny v Africe, nejprve se snaží zmapovat aktivity, kterým se tu věnuje, a seznamuje s podobami spolupráce, které jsou rozdílné od těch s jinými zeměmi v minulosti. Představuje tak typ spolupráce, na kterém jsou postaveny nejhodnotnější investice této bilaterální pomoci, čímž jsou projekty na výstavbu dopravních a energetických infrastruktur výměnou za přístup k africkým přírodním zdrojům, zejména ropě.
Dále pak práce věnuje pozornost charakteristice aktuálních socio-ekonomických situací Etiopie a Demokratické republiky Kongo a zhodnocuje vývoj nejdůležitějších ekonomicko-sociálních ukazatelů jako je HDP a HDI. Přitom zjišťuje, že tyto veličiny obecně zaznamenávají růst a zlepšení, který však není tak výrazný v sociální oblasti, u ukazatelů, které více vypovídají o kvalitě života obyvatel těchto zemí.
Obecně tak práce přichází se závěrem, že vliv čínské přítomnosti v Africe je převážně pozitivní, že Čína jako země mající sama zkušenost s transformací ze zaostalé země v druhou největší ekonomiku na světě zvolila odlišný přístup ke spolupráci se Třetím světem, který tyto země pobízí k většímu využití své komparativní výhody, kterou je přítomnost nerostného bohatství a levná pracovní síla, výměnou za to, co akutně potřebují- rozvoj dopravní a energetické infrastruktury. |

| Abstract: | The bachelor thesis deals with development aid in general, presents its definition and analyzes in particular the development of various attitudes that were previously discussed. This theoretical background is an essential part of finding more effective approaches, as it can generally be said that the Western assistance to date has failed to do so. The work is thus further dealt with by other development cooperation alternatives that could be capable of 'the poorest' billion out of poverty.
The second part then deals exclusively with the role of China in Africa, first attempts to map out the activities it deals with, and acquaintances with forms of cooperation that are different from those with other countries in the past. It represents the type of cooperation on which the most valuable investments of this bilateral aid are built, which are projects for the construction of transport and energy infrastructures in exchange for access to African natural resources, especially oil.
In addition, the work focuses on the characteristics of the current socio-economic situation of Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo and evaluates the development of the most important economic and social indicators such as GDP and HDI. It finds that these variables generally record growth and improvement, which is not so significant in the social sphere, indicators that are more tangible about the quality of life of the people in these countries.
In general, the work comes to the conclusion that China's presence in Africa is largely positive, as China, as a country with experience of transformation from a backward country into the world's second largest economy, has chosen a different approach to cooperation with the Third World, Exploiting their comparative advantage, which is the presence of mineral wealth and cheap labor, in exchange for what they are acutely needed - the development of transport and energy infrastructure. |
