Development and operation of a high volume video delivery application

Video streaming is one of the major services used by Internet users at the moment. It issaid that almost half of the bandwidth of the Internet is used for this purpose. And it isexpectable that the importance of this domain will grow in time. And because more and morevideo content is going to be delivered to the customers via IP networks, it is beneficial for thereaders to get to know the matters of building a streaming service from the technological,infrastructure and business point of view.The goal of this thesis is to provide an overall insight into methods and technologies usedfor a video streaming service development. This generally applicable description can bebeneficial for entrepreneurs, students and other professions for them to be used in their ownvideo streaming service development. Especially when there is no other equivalently complextext describing the domain nor in Czech neither in English.Domains necessary for successful streaming service development will be described inthis thesis. And several possible approaches will be described as well depending on theparticular use case as these use cases can hugely differ with a particular focus on highthroughput services. For example, it makes a big difference if it is a service planned to be usedin the private network or on the Internet, or if it should serve small number or a big number ofend users.Described domains will contain matters of video players, streaming protocols, codecs,different end devices, digital rights management, monitoring, scaling, testing, business modelsetc.In the beginning, streaming or so-called IPTV service will be described. In the followingpart, there will be described an area of video codecs, containers, streaming protocols, clientdevices, players and a server part of the service. At the end, there will be shortly described anarea of development, testing and monitoring of an IPTV service.
