Is the euro a cause of faster economic convergence of the Slovak Republic?

| Abstract: | Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá procesem přijetí eura jako společné evropské měny na Slovensku a jeho vlivem na výkon této ekonomiky, která dlouhodobě prochází významnou konvergencí oproti ostatním státům střední a východní Evropy. Výsledky získané prostřednictvím Synthetic Control Method ukazují, že vliv vstupu do Evropské měnové unie se v prvních třech letech nijak zásadně nepromítl do výkonnosti slovenské ekonomiky. Během let 2012-2016 lze však pozorovat významný nárůst HDP na obyvatele v průměru o 6 %. I přes tento pozitivní vliv nemůžeme o euru mluvit jako o hlavní příčině slovenské ekonomické konvergence, která je primárně způsobená specifickou ekonomickou strukturou tohoto státu plynoucí z jeho průmyslového zaměření. |

| Abstract: | This bachelor thesis deals with the process of adopting the euro as a common European currency in Slovakia and its influence on the performance of this economy, which has undergone significant convergence over the long period compared to other Central and Eastern European countries. The results obtained by the Synthetic Control Method show that influence of accession to the European Monetary Union in the first three years was not reflected fundamentally in the performance of the Slovak economy. However, we are able to observe a significant increase of GDP per capita during 2012-2016 by 6 % in average. In spite of this positive effect we cannot say, that the euro is the main cause of Slovak economic convergence, which is primarily due to the specific economic structure of the country resulting from its industrial orientation. |
