Creation of the Bretton Woods Monetary System in the Context of American Foreign Trade and Monetary Policy in 1933-1945

| Abstract: | Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na vývoj zahraničně-obchodní a měnové politiky Spojených států v období vlády prezidenta Franklin Delano Roosevelta v letech 1933 až 1945 a chce na základě jejich vývoje poukázat na možná pozitiva a negativa Brettonwoodského měnového systému pro ekonomický vývoj USA, a to s důrazem na měnovou stabilitu a expanzi a rozvoj mezinárodního obchodu. V tomto kontextu se práce rovněž věnuje popisu přechodu USA od doktríny izolacionismu k internacionalismu a jejich rostoucímu začlenění se do mezinárodního obchodu. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. V první části je shrnuto teoretické poznání hospodářského vývoje Spojených států se zaměřením na zahraniční obchod, měnovou politiku, včetně vzniku Brottonwoodského měnového systému a Všeobecné dohody o clech a obchodu. Praktická část se věnuje indikátorům zahraničně–obchodní a měnové politiky zahrnující platební bilanci, směnné kurzy a devizové rezervy, investice, půjčky, a nakonec překážkám zahraničního obchodu. Závěrem práce je potvrzení hypotézy, že Brettonwoodský systém navazoval na předchozí evoluční vývoj zahraničně obchodní politiky a měnové politiky vlády F. D. Roosevelta a de facto znamenal jejich vrchol. Hypotéza tvrdící, že cílem institucí, které byly vytvořeny Brettonwoodskou dohodou, bylo vytvořit podmínky pro udržitelnou stabilní měnovou politiku a udržitelnou expanzi a růst zahraničního obchodu pro ekonomiku USA ke konci 2. světové války, je zamítnuta. |

| Abstract: | This bachelor thesis focuses on the development of foreign trade and monetary policies of the United States in the period of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's government in 1933-1945, and on the basis of their development, it points out the possible positives and negatives of the Bretton Woods system for US economic development with emphasis on monetary stability and expansion and development of international trade. In this context, the paper also deals with the description of the transition from the doctrine of isolationism to internationalism and increasing U.S. integration into international trade. The thesis is divided into two parts. The first part summarizes theoretical knowledge of the economic development of the United States, focusing on foreign trade and monetary policy, including the foundation of the Bretton Woods Monetary System and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. The practical part deals with indicators of foreign-trade and monetary policy including balance of payments, exchange rates and foreign exchange reserves, investments, loans, and eventually foreign trade barriers. The conclusion of the thesis is the confirmation of the hypothesis that the Bretton Woods system was based on the previous evolutionary development of F.D. Roosevelt's foreign policy and monetary policy and de facto was their climax. The hypothesis arguing that the goal of the institutions created by the Bretton Woods Agreement was to create the conditions for a sustainable stable monetary policy and the sustainable expansion and growth of foreign trade for the US economy at the end of World War II is rejected. |
