Abstract: | The goal of this thesis is to test the random walk hypothesis and excess smoothness of consumption for the United States data in the period from 1947 to 2018. The result of the random walk hypothesis test is contrary to the results of the same tests in Hall (1978). Consumption follows a more complex process than first order autoregression. Lagged income has a predictive power for current consumption in regression containing lagged consumption. Wealth was also confirmed being significant in the same regression. Lagged inflation was proved to be insignificant. Using new data, the pure random walk hypothesis was rejected. Excess smoothness test using VAR model confirmed previous results of Campbell and Deaton (1989). The real variability of innovation to consumption is by 30% to 40% lower than the predicted variability of innovation implied by the random walk hypothesis. |
