Project Management Analysis of IT Project Using EVM

The masters’ thesis has an application character and its aim is to verify the applicability of the Earned Value Management (EVM) method on selected IT project. Part of the thesis is a critical research especially of the foreign literature providing an overview of the usability and benefits of the given method. Interviews with the Czech experts show there is a lack of attention to EVM in the Czech Republic confirmed also by the Czech Republic Chapter of PMI. When analysing the progress and its prediction of the selected project, I supplemented EVM method by ES formulas. The thesis contains methodology of the EVM application to the selected project and description of the problem solving during data collection and method application. I confirmed sufficiently good information ability of the method, its added value, and applicability on the selected IT project. The practical use of EVM and thesis conclusions can serve project managers when applying EVM to their projects as well as research purposes. I recommended the selected company to implement EVMS with PMO assistance. The thesis is limited by the application of EVM to a historical project which caused the impossibility to continuously update the project course with EVM results. The lack of information about the project prevented an execution of root cause analysis of deviations and an investigation of dependency between business contracts’ type and EVM application. Finally, I suggested topics suitable for further research exploration.
