Analysis and comparison of selected indicators of the banking sectors of Portugal, Spain and Italy before and after the acceptance of the Basel III

| Abstract: | Reakcí na finanční krizi bylo shledání tehdejších kapitálových standardů jako nevyhovující a, v souladu s konceptem bankovní unie, vydání aktualizované verze basilejských dohod, které upravují zásady kapitálové přiměřenosti na vyšší úrovni, než tomu bylo v minulém vydání, Basel II. Cílem práce je analyzovat strukturu jednotlivých bankovních sektorů i vývoj profitability v čase, následně naznačit determinanty ziskovosti národních bankovních sektorů. V práci je nejprve představen koncept bankovní unie, následně pak všechny jeho pilíře: Single Rulebook, Jednotný mechanismus dohledu a Jednotný mechanismus pro řešení krizí. V logické návaznosti práce představuje Basel III a standardy kapitálové přiměřenosti, dále jsou představeny vybrané ukazatele bankovních trhů. Pomocí komparativní analýzy jsou odhaleny některé heterogenity v jednotlivých bankovních sektorech. Výsledkem analýzy profitability národních bankovních sektorů je vymezení indikátorů napovídajících o možné ziskovosti daného bankovního sektoru, tyto předpoklady jsou srovnány s realitou ziskovosti a následně konfrontovány s nákladovou stránkou bankovních sektorů. Na základě provedené analýzy práce neshledává jediným prvkem, který změnil ziskovost bankovních sektorů po finančních krizi, zvýšené kapitálové nároky a upozorňuje na existenci některých heterogenit v rámci sledovaných sektorů. |

| Abstract: | In reaction to the financial crisis, the capital standards Basel II was found unsuitable and, in accordance with concept of banking union, there was issued an updated version, Basel III. Basel III sets capital adequacy at a higher level than Basel II. The aim of the master‘s thesis is to analyze the structure of individual banking sectors as well as the development of profitability over time, then to indicate the determinants of profitability of the national banking sectors. The thesis introduces the concept of the banking union as well as its three pillars: Single Rulebook, Single Supervisory Mechanism and Single Resolution Mechanism. The thesis introduces Basel III, capital adequacy standards and selected indicators of banking sectors in logical sequence. Comparative analysis reveals certain heterogenities in individual banking sectors. The analysis of the profitability of the national banking sectors results in the definition of the potential indicators of the profitability of the banking sectors, which are compared to the reality of ROA and ROE. These results are then confronted with the cost-side of the banking sectors. Based on the analyzes, it is not possible to claim that the only reason for changed level of profitability of banking sectors after the financial crisis, is increased capital requirements standards. The analysis also reveals the existence of some heterogenities in discussed sectors. |
