Impact of time constraints on decision-making in managerial problems, ethical dilemmas and model situations of evidence-based management

| Abstract: | Doktorská disertační práce zkoumá a v některých případech i prokazuje negativní dopad časové tísně na řešení manažerských rozhodovacích problémů, etických dilemat a modelových situací evidence-based managementu za pomoci behaviorálního experimentu, v němž byli účastníci náhodně rozděleni do skupiny, která řešila rozhodovací problémy za časové tísně a na skupinu, která tytéž problémy řešila bez časové tísně. Na vzorku 161 studentů a 219 manažerů byly za použití případových studií, řešení úloh a dilemat prokázány efekty časové tísně na větší část použitých kognitivních zkreslení. Vzhledem k tomu, že časová tíseň vedla k distresu, který lze zažívat při plnění pracovních úkolů na řídící pozici, vyvolávají výsledky otázky na připravenost především mladých manažerů na podobné situace, které nemusí být schopni zvládat v takové kvalitě, jakou u odborníka na řízení lze předpokládat. V případě projekce a přílišného optimismu výsledky ukazují v neprospěch zkušenějších manažerů. V případě intuice výsledky ukazují v neprospěch studentů. Hloubkovými rozhovory s 62 manažery byla zjištěna u větší části zkoumaných subjektů schopnost uvědomění si chyby po pominutí časové tísně, nicméně také silný sklon k racionalizaci chybného rozhodnutí, nezávisle na typu chyby a nezávisle na tom, zda je časová tíseň přítomna, či nikoliv. Schopnost většiny subjektů správně ohodnotit validitu zdrojů nutných pro nejlepší možné rozhodnutí, nebyla prokázána. Metodologicky se jedná o spojení přístupů kvalitativního a kvantitativního výzkumu. Výsledky práce poukazují na potřebnost rozvíjení kompetencí přístupu založeného na důkazech a řešení reálných úloh již v přípravě na manažerské povolání. |

| Abstract: | The doctoral dissertation thesis examines and in some cases proves the negative impact of time constraints on the solution of managerial decision-making problems, ethical dilemmas and model situations of evidence-based management using a behavioral experiment in which participants were randomly assigned to a group that solved decision-making problems for time and to a group that solved the same problems without time pressure. On a sample of 161 students and 219 managers, the use of case studies, problem solving, and dilemmas demonstrated the effects of time pressure on the greater part of the cognitive distortions used. Given that the time span has led to the distress that can be experienced in fulfilling the work tasks in the management position, the results raise the question of the readiness of young managers, in particular, for similar situations that may not be able to handle the quality that a management expert can assume . In the case of projection and excessive optimism, the results prove to the detriment of more experienced managers. In the case of intuition, the results point to the detriment of the students. Through in-depth interviews with 62 managers, the ability to be aware of mistakes after a time-out has been detected in a larger part of the surveyed subjects, but also a strong tendency to rationalize the wrong decision, regardless of the type of error and whether or not time is present. The ability of most subjects to properly assess the validity of the resources needed for the best possible decision has not been demonstrated. Methodologically, this is a combination of approaches to qualitative and quantitative research. The results of the work point to the need to develop competence-based evidence-based approaches and to solve real challenges in preparation for the management profession. |
