Abstract:
This master thesis deals with the energy security dilemma of the European Union in the 21st Century. The main focus of the thesis is to determine the EU's energy dependency on its energy supply while displaying its energy-related strategies on the EU’s realpolitik. The theoretical part of the thesis elaborates on the security theories as well as the international relations theories of realism, neorealism and liberalism in relation to energy security. The analytical chapters then analyze the energy relations of the EU and the Russian Federation while taking secondary energy suppliers such as the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran into consideration.
