Analysis of high growth firms in countries of Central and Eastern Europe

| Abstract: | Tato diplomová práce se zabývá analýzou rychle rostoucích firem (gazel) v zemích střední a východní Evropy. Cílem práce je nalezení charakteristik gazel vedoucích k lepší finanční výkonnosti a porovnání rychle rostoucích firem mezi jednotlivými státy. Pro vymezení gazel je použita definice Davida Birche. Explorační analýza dat a testování hypotéz jsou provedeny pomocí nástroje LISP-Miner vyvíjeného na Vysoké škole ekonomické. V práci jsou analyzována data 9 735 firem, které dosahovaly rychlého růstu v letech 2014-2017. Firemní data pocházejí z databáze Amadeus. Je provedena analýza distribuce gazel v daných státech podle velikosti, právní formy, odvětví a regionu. Gazely v analyzovaných zemích mají nejčastěji velikost malých podniků a mikropodniků, podnikají pod právní formou společnosti s ručením omezeným a mají sídlo v urbanizovaných regionech, zejména v regionech, kde se nacházejí hlavní města států. Gazely ve urbanizovaných regionech dosahují častěji nadprůměrného růstu tržeb v 8 z 10 analyzovaných zemích, zatímco gazely podnikající ve znalostně náročných odvětvích dosahují nadprůměrného růstu tržeb ve větší míře pouze ve 4 státech. Hlavním přínosem této práce je zmapování gazel podnikajících v regionu střední a východní Evropy a jejich charakteristik. |

| Abstract: | This thesis focuses on high growth firms (gazelles) in Central and Eastern Europe. The aim of this thesis is an analysis of firms in each country, finding characteristics that lead to better financial performance and comparison of gazelles across analysed countries. David Birch‘s definition is used for defining high growth companies. Exploratory analysis and testing of hypotheses are done via LISP-Miner tool, which is developed at the University of Economics, Prague. In total data for 9,735 firms which achieved high growth in period 2014-2017 are analysed. Firm-level data are obtained from the Amadeus database. In the empirical part of the thesis, the distribution of gazelles is analysed by size, legal form, industry, and region in each country. Gazelles in analysed countries are mostly the size of micro and small enterprises, they operate under the legal form of limited liability company and are located in urbanised regions, especially in the areas around capital cities. Gazelles in urbanised regions achieve above-average sales growth in 8 out of 10 analysed countries while gazelles in knowledge-intensive industries achieve above-average growth only in 4 countries. The main contribution of this work is mapping out gazelles and their characteristics in Central and Eastern Europe. |
