Microstates in International Relations: Comparison of Malta´s and Andorra´s foreign policy

This bachelor´s thesis focuses on the issue of the behaviour of European microstates in international relations, specializing on two specific examples – Malta and Andorra. The aim of the study is to analyse and compare the foreign policy of these countries and to determine, whether their demeanour towards the surroundings varies among themselves. The first part of the thesis deals initially with the matter of defining the term microstate, then it focuses on the definition of foreign policy including its objectives and instruments. According to the stated theoretical framework, Malta´s and Andorra´s foreign policy is analysed in the rest of the study, mainly using government statements, Foreign Office websites and other primary resources. In the end of the thesis, their comparison is drawn up. Through the research carried out, the thesis identifies specific parts of foreign policy, which the countries lay their emphasis on, and highlights differences between them. Based on the data stated, it is possible to further develop the debate on the issue of microstates as a separate group of actors and their impact on the international affairs.
