Abstract: | The thesis deals with the design of cyber-physical systems (CPS) and approaches to their adaptation. Grasping adaptation and emergence in the design of CPS is, due to their considerable diversity and complexity, a very current problem, the solution to which could be the use of Hayek's concept of spontaneous market order – the so-called catallaxy. Therefore, the thesis’ aim was to design a model applying the principles of Hayek's catallaxy to the architecture of cyber-physical systems and to verify the feasibility and benefits of this model using multi-agent simulation.First, the meaning of the term "catallaxy" is clarified and examples of the application of catallactic principles in computer science are presented. Next, the term "cyberphysical system" (CPS) is explained, and current approaches to CPS design and modeling and their challenges are presented. Finally, a model of the application of Hayek's market theory (catallaxy) to the conceptual design of CPS is proposed and its relevance is verified through an experiment in the form of a multiagent simulation. The results of the experiment indicate that the general and implementation-agnostic catallactic model presented is feasible and that a cyber-physical system can function effectively on the basis of selfish maximization of individual agents' utility. The agents being guided only by price signals and governed by catallactic rules. The thesis therefore contributed with a promising direction for future design of self-organizing cyber-physical systems across application domains. |
