Quantitative survey of the state of testing practices in the Czech Republic

| Abstract: | Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na zjištění aktuálního stavu testovacích praktik a automatizace testování v České republice. V první části práce byla provedena rešerše dostupných zdrojů včetně předchozích provedených průzkumů v České republice i ve světě. Následně byly teoreticky vymezeny pojmy spojené s testováním softwaru, automatizací testování a procesem testování. Ve druhé části práce bylo navrženo dotazníkové šetření na základě předchozího provedeného průzkumu v Jižní Americe. Otázky z původního průzkumu byly zrevidovány a bylo navrhnuto upravené dotazníkové šetření, jež rozšířilo původní otázky o oblast automatizace a sedm nových testovacích praktik. Cílem šetření bylo zodpovědět následující čtyři výzkumné otázky: (1) jaké praktiky jsou používané, (2) jaké praktiky respondenti vnímají jako důležité, (3) jaký je rozdíl v používání a vnímané důležitosti testovacích praktik na agilních a tradičních projektech a (4) využívání automatice testování. Po pilotním ověření bylo dotazníkové šetření spuštěno a šířeno přes sociální sítě a organizace v České republice. Celkem bylo získáno 151 kompletních odpovědí, které byly využity při analýze dat.Výsledky ukazují, že tři nejvíce používané a zároveň důležité testovací praktiky v České republice jsou (1) zaznamenávání výsledků, (2) retestování po změně softwaru a (3) analýza defektů. Dále ukazují existenci rozdílu v používání a vnímané důležitosti 15 testovacích praktik na agilních a tradičních projektech. Nejvíce automatizovanými typy testů jsou regresní, integrační a smoke testy. Nejčastějším přínosem po zavedení automatizace je snížení doby testovacího cyklu, avšak nejvíce respondentů čelí problému automatizace často měnící se aplikace. |

| Abstract: | This diploma thesis is focused on characterizing the current state of testing practices and test automation in the Czech Republic. In the first part of the work, a search of available sources was performed, including previous surveys in the Czech Republic and in the world. Subsequently, the concepts associated with software testing, test automation and testing process were theoretically defined. In the second part of the work, a questionnaire was designed based on a previous survey in South America. The questions from the original questionnaire were revised and a modified questionnaire survey was proposed, which expanded the original questions to include automation and seven new testing practices. The aim of the questionnaire was to answer the following four research questions: (1) what practices are used, (2) what practices respondents perceive as important, (3) what is the difference in use and perceived importance of testing practices in agile and traditional projects and (4) use of test automation. After the pilot verification, the questionnaire was launched and distributed through social networks and organizations in the Czech Republic. A total of 151 complete responses were obtained, which were used in the data analysis.The results show that the three most used and at the same time important testing practices in the Czech Republic are (1) recording results, (2) retesting after a software change and (3) defect analysis. They also show the existence of a difference in use and the perceived importance of 15 testing practices on agile and traditional projects. The most automated types of tests are regression, integration and smoke tests. The most common benefit after the implementation of test automation is the reduction of test cycle time, but most respondents face the problem of test automation of frequently changing application. |
