Comparison of demand and supply of gold and Bitcoin: Is Bitcoin on the way to become the digital gold of our age?

| Abstract: | Cílem této práce je zjistit, zda je Bitcoin na cestě stát se digitálním zlatem této doby a jaká rizika jsou s ní spojená. Abych svého cíle dosáhl, nejprve jsem srovnal schopnost lidí ovlivnit monetární zásobu zlata a Bitcoinu. Následně jsem srovnal cenový vývoj zlata, Bitcoinu a akciového indexu S&P 500, abych určil, zda je Bitcoin využíván jako bezpečné úložiště, zajišťovací, či diverzifikační nástroj. Poté jsem provedl případovou studii Venezuely, která měla za úkol ukázat, jakým způsobem byl již Bitcoin využit jako bezpečné úložiště v monetárně způsobené hyperinflaci a jestli se její vládě povedlo regulacemi ovlivnit některé z jeho funkcí. Kombinací poznání z předešlých zkoumání jsem v závěru určil nejzásadnější rizika, kterým Bitcoin čelí, s přihlédnutím k nejpravděpodobnějším možnostem nejbližšího ekonomického vývoje. Svou analýzou jsem zjistil, že je Bitcoin diverzifikačním nástrojem, který bude mít těžké přežít, pokud se akciový trh nachází na počátku svého medvědího trendu a pokud budou vlády regulovat jeho těžbu. Pokud bude akciový trh stabilní či bude pokračovat v býčím trendu, Bitcoin bude mít šanci přežít do období inflace způsobené znehodnocením národních měn, která by z něj mohla udělat digitální zlato této doby. |

| Abstract: | The goal of this study is to find out whether Bitcoin is on the way to become the digital gold of our age and what are the risks associated with that path. To achieve my goal, initially, I have compared the ability to influence monetary base of Bitcoin and gold. Consequently, I have compared the price evolution of those assets to the S&P 500 stock market index to conclude whether Bitcoin is currently used as a safe-haven, hedge or a diversifier. Following, I have conducted a case study of Venezuela, which should find out how was Bitcoin used as a safe-haven in the environment of hyperinflation caused by excessive monetary stimulus and if the government was able to influence some of his functions through regulations. The combination of my findings has allowed me to find out what are the main risks that Bitcoin network faces while bearing in mind the most probable economic development in the near future. Through my analysis, I have concluded that Bitcoin is a diversifier, which will have hard times surviving if stock market is at its beginning of a bearish trend and if governments begin regulating its mining. On the other hand, if the stock market remains stable or continues in its bull market, Bitcoin will have a chance to survive until the era of inflation caused by the devaluation of natonal currencies begins, which could make him the digital gold of our age. |
