Abstract: | In this thesis I deal with the analysis of hyperinflation in Venezuela. First, I summarize theoretical knowledge about inflation, and I examine historical cases of hyperinflation. In the next section, I deal with the quantity theory of money and in the closing section, I present the issue of trade sanctions imposed on Venezuela. In the empirical part, I analyse main determinants of hyperinflation in Venezuela and test the hypothesis that this phenomenon is mainly caused by the failures in fiscal and monetary policy. Based on quarterly data from 2009 to 2019, I estimate the autoregressive distributed lag model for cointegrated time series using inflation as explained variable and volume of liquidity, nominal interest rate and amount of foreign debt as explanatory variables. The results show a positive effect of the explanatory variables on inflation and confirm my hypothesis. |
