Economic migration in the European Union: Is Brexit result that the United Kingdom has not used the transitional period restricting immigration in 2004?

| Abstract: | Diplomová práce je zaměřena na vývoj ekonomické migrace směřující ze zemí EU8 do Velké Británie a vliv této migrace na rozhodnutí Velké Británie opustit Evropskou unii. Cílem této práce bylo analyzovat rozsah, vývoj, strukturu a dopady ekonomické migrace obyvatelstva ze zemí EU8 do Velké Británie. Pro zjištění možného dopadu přechodných opatření omezujících migraci byl porovnán rozsah migrace ze zemí EU8 směřující po roce 2004 do Velké Británie a migrace ze zemí EU8 směřující do Německa a Rakouska. Německo a Rakousko jsou země, které na rozdíl od Velké Británie přechodná opatření omezující migraci zavedly. K výzkumu byla použita data především za období let 2000 až 2018. Provedená analýza prokázala, že Velká Británie se po roce 2004 setkala s rychlejším nárůstem počtu migrantů ze zemí EU8 oproti Německu a Rakousku. Dále byl porovnán vývoj migrace směřující do Velké Británie ze zemí EU8 s migrací ze zemí EU2, vůči kterým Velká Británie již přechodná opatření v roce 2007 zavedla. Z této komparace bylo zjištěno, že vývoj migrace ze zemí EU2 měl pomalejší vývoj a změny nebyly tak dramatické jako u migrace ze zemí EU8. Na základě provedených analýz bylo potvrzeno, že rozhodnutí Velké Británie nezavádět v roce 2004 opatření omezující migraci pracovní síly z nových členských států Evropské unie později přispělo k Brexitu. |

| Abstract: | The thesis is focused on the changes of economic migration from the EU8 countries to the United Kingdom and the impact of this migration on the decision of the United Kingdom to leave the European Union. The aim of this thesis was to analyze the extent, development, structure and impacts of economic migration of the population from EU8 countries to the United Kingdom between 2000 and 2018. To determine the possible impact of transitional measures restricting migration, the extent of migration from EU8 countries to the United Kingdom after 2004 was compared with migration from EU8 countries to Germany and Austria. Germany and Austria are countries which, unlike the United Kingdom, have introduced transitional measures restricting migration. The analysis showed that the United Kingdom encountered a faster increase in the number of migrants from EU8 countries compared to Germany and Austria after 2004. Furthermore, changes of migration to the United Kingdom from EU8 countries were compared with changes of migration from EU2 countries as transitional measures were applied for them by the United Kingdom for EU2 countries in 2007. From this comparison it was found that the increase of migration from EU2 countries was slower and the changes were not as drastic as those of migration from EU8 countries. Based on the analyzes performed, it was confirmed that the United Kingdom's decision to not introduce measures to restrict labour migration from the new member states of the European Union in 2004 later contributed to Brexit. |
