Abstract:

Abstract:
The following master’s thesis focuses on modelling and forecasting the conditional variance of exchange rate time series. The main approaches to modelling and estimating volatility in this thesis are based on classical statistics. The evaluated models of class (G)ARCH and their variations – ARCH, GARCH, FIGARCH, EGARCH, GJR- GARCH and HARCH were applied to the time series of the EUR/USD foreign exchange rate with a five-minute, hourly and daily frequency. After the analysis of the distribution of logarithmic returns, the assumption of leptokurtic distribution is used, which leads to much better results of the models than when the normal distribution is used. GED and Student t distribution are applied. The most successful models were generally the models considering the asymmetry and long memory in the time series, which was most noticeable especially in the case of the daily time series. For each frequency, a different type of model achieved the best results, yet none of the models was able to capture all the information contained in the time series.
