Role of sixth-generation aircraft in the security and strategic culture of the USA, RF, PRC and the EU

The topic of this thesis is the role of sixth-generation aircraft in strategic cultures of the United States, Russian Federation, People’s Republic of China and the European Union. The thesis aims to answer the research question of Why are sixth-generation aircraft an essential aspect of strategic cultures of the USA, Russia, China and the EU? The main method is the qualitative analysis of texts; however, also comparison (statistical data), description, deduction and synthesis are used. In the theoretical part, the issue and current state of the theory of strategic culture is firstly introduced, together with an adoption of a definition suitable for the thesis. Afterwards, particular strategic cultures and their adapted versions are introduced. The established theoretical framework is then applied further in the thesis. The core of the research is a determination of the role and significance of the sixth-generation aircraft for strategic cultures of the selected actors through a synthesis of historical context; anticipated technical parameters, armament, development, etc.; and outline of a context of economic and strategic rivalry, which showcase a comprehensive nature of the examined relationship. The research has confirmed the assumption of relation between strategic cultures and sixth-generation aircraft as independent and dependent variables, respectively. Particular designs and anticipated characteristics correspond with paradigms and aspects of the selected strategic cultures. The sixth-generation aircraft are inter alia a balancing mechanism to the growing complexity of the international security environment, enable the preservation of the current forms of strategic cultures in time; and will broaden tactical, operational and strategic options of the selected actors, or be an instrument for achieving of strategic objectives. Finally, they are essential in addressing the technical and technological development of their rivals in terms of a broader balancing behaviour and effective protection of national interests. Interestingly, there might be a transformational influence of high technology on those strategic cultures, that have traditionally compensated quality with quantity, which would mean a change in the relationship between the dependent and independent variables. Although the sixth-generation aircraft are still in the development phase; thus, the determination of the role in and relation to strategic cultures might be seen as premature, the thesis can nevertheless serve as a steppingstone for a more in-depth future research.
