Medellin cartel and Anglo-Saxon powers: Contribution to the economic impact of drug trafficking on the US and the UK

| Abstract: | Tato práce má za cíl analyzovat trh s drogami v 70.-90. letech, analyzovat dopady trhu s drogami na socio-ekonomické prostředí USA a Velké Británie a analyzovat roli Medellínského kartelu na trhu s drogami. Vzhledem ke zkoumání dopadů na anglosaské mocnosti práce úmyslně vychází z anglicky psaných zdrojů, a i případová studie týkající se Medellínského kartelu užívá spíše „americký“ pohled. Práce odpovídá na výzkumné otázky týkající se funkčnosti a struktury trhu s drogami, historie Medellínského kartelu a dopadů trhu s drogami na socio-ekonomické prostředí USA a Velké Británie. Dále potvrzuje hypotézu tvrdící, že trh s drogami, na němž měl ve zkoumaném období výsadní postavení Medellínský kartel, měl vliv na dění politické, ekonomické i sociální v USA i ve Velké Británii a stanovuje teoretický rámec dopadů platný pro státy všechny. Růst trhu s drogami ve zkoumaném období měl na svědomí nárůst zdravotních komplikací a úmrtí, spojených s užíváním nelegálních substancí, dále nárůst podílu vězňů odsouzených za drogové delikty a kriminality celkově, efekty byly pozorovány i na životním prostředí či v makroekonomickém řízení. Práce užívá metody deskripce, analýzy, případové studie a progresivní metodu. |

| Abstract: | This work aims to analyze the drug market in the 70s-90s. years, to analyze the impact of the drug market on the socio-economic environment of the USA and the United Kingdom and to analyze the role of the Medellin cartel in the drug market. Due to the study of the effects on the Anglo-Saxon powers, the work is intentionally based on English-written sources, and the case study concerning the Medellin cartel also uses a rather "American" view. The thesis answers research questions concerning the functioning and structure of the drug market, the history of the Medellin cartel and the impact of the drug market on the socio-economic environment of the USA and Great Britain. It further confirms the hypothesis that the drug market, in which the Medellin cartel had a privileged position during the period under review, had an influence on political, economic and social developments in the United States and the United Kingdom, and established a theoretical impact framework for all states. The growth of the drug market in the period under review was due to an increase in health complications and deaths associated with the use of illegal substances, an increase in the proportion of prisoners convicted of drug offenses and increase in crime overall, and effects were also observed on the environment or macroeconomic management. The work uses methods of description, analysis, case study and progressive method. |
