Trade relations between Czechoslovakia and France between 1918 and 1938

The thesis analysis predominantly foreign trade between Czechoslovakia and France during interwar era. After the collapse of Habsburg monarchy, the positive impact of France to the foundation of an independent Czechoslovak state significant.. Therefore the aim of this thesis is to analyse whether the political interests coresponded with the international trade interests between both countries. The theoretical part describes the economic and political realities of both countries in the interwar period and their cooperation, which was based on mutual trade agreements.The practical part consist of detailed analysis of total foreign trade of both countries and also their mutual trade cooperation in terms of export and import. It also provides detailed view of commodity structure. One of the partial conclusion of this thesis is, that the political interests did not resulted into trading interests between both countries. Czechoslovak trade was oriented towards different countries (namely Germany, Austria and USA). For comparative analysis of the differences between foreign trade in the interwar era and the post transformation trade cooperation between the respective countries, the adjustment to the SITC 1 methodology has been used in practical part. This comparative analysis let to several outcomes, one of them is that after the economic transformation in Czechoslovakia, the commodities with higher degree of processing are exported to France compared to interwar period. On the other hand, the import of commodities remains very similar to the interwar period. The another conclusion of this thesis is that there is negligible risk of trade concentration towards one commodity divided accordign to SITC 1 methodology on the part of import . But a higher risk of concentration on the export side has been revealed, which manifested itself in 1920, when total exports were dependent on exports of one commodity – sugar.
