Economic context of brown coal mining in Czechoslovakia in the years 1945-1953

The bachelor´s thesis follows up the development of the brown coal industry in Czechoslovakia in years 1945-1953. The first chapter as the theoretical part focuses on social policy of miners starting in year 1945, then in the post-war period and ending in 1953. It also focuses on energy industry and the most important brown coal regions in which among other things, their history is briefly described. The practical part follows up the brown coal mining industry in the period 1945-1953. It first describes the state of brown coal industry after the war, then during a two-year plan, and at last after the post February government took office and the first five-year plan. The chapters are supplemented by an analysis of the foreign trade within the CMEA after its creation and development of the workforce. Due to the lack of publications about the brown coal, all analysis in the practical part is performed from the sources of the National Archive. Based on the drawn data, it was confirmed that significant mining and consumption of brown coal had a positive effect on the industrial development and at the same time contributed to the development of energy sector throughout Czechoslovakia as a fuel source of thermal power plants, especially in Northwest Bohemia. In terms of foreign trade, the surplus stock of brown coal was exported to the CMEA countries. Last but not least, the social conditions of miners improved in the period under review, especially with the aim of making mining work more attractive, in response to labor shortages in the sector.
