Training of Power BI users in a selected company

This thesis addresses the problems faced by users of Self-service Business Intelligence applications. The main objective of the thesis was to find out what user problems occur in a specific selected company and try to propose solutions to eliminate the detected problems and thus bring new value to the selected company. After studying the problem in the literature, a qualitative research method was used to tackle the problem. As part of this research, in-depth interviews were conducted with users of the Power BI to share their positive and negative experiences. The research explored 3 specific areas: working with data sources, working with the tool and BI governance. An analysis was conducted on the data collected during the interviews and identified specific user issues. Through the research conducted, it was found that individual users have different levels of knowledge and skills. This level of competence determines what data sources they can use in their work. The main bottleneck was identified as the training system that cannot capture the different levels of individual workers. The main result of the work is the design of a training system for data analysts who will work with Power BI. This training system attempts to eliminate the bottlenecks that arose from the research conducted. One of the elements of the design is to establish competency levels for data analysts. These were determined to be 2: basic and advanced levels. The training itself begins with a data literacy test to determine how the analyst performs in 5 defined areas. The subsequent training process works with the result of this test and combines 3 different training methods: mentoring, training, self-learning portal. The combination of these methods will help the new employee gain the necessary skills for their job and bring more value to the company. Finally, the whole proposal was successfully validated from 2 different sides, thus fulfilling the main objective of the thesis.
