Is budget a major determinant of success in Formula One? Analysis of the relationship between the amount and the composition of the budget with the placement in the championship in the years 2010 to 2020

| Abstract: | Cílem této práce je analýza vlivu rozpočtové strategie na úspěch stájí Formule 1 v šampionátu konstruktérů WCC. Práce analyzuje výsledky a finanční data z celkem jedenácti po sobě jdoucích období od roku 2010 do roku 2020. Jedná se o období před zavedením rozpočtové stropu. Jedná se tedy o přirozený experiment. V práci je demonstrován pozitivní vliv rozpočtové strategie na umístění v šampionátu WCC, počet získaných bodů a četnost umístění na stupních vítězů. Motivace stájí dosáhnout nejlepšího možného umístění je vysvětlena na výnosech souvisejících s úspěchem, a to jak přímých, tak nepřímých. K analýze byla použita metoda analýzy nákladů a výnosů, a modely byly vytvořeny metodou nejmenších čtverců. V práci slouží jako ukazatele úspěchu umístění v šampionátu WCC, počet získaných bodů, četnost umístění na stupních vítězů a počet nedokončených závodů. Výsledky ekonometrických modelů dokazují významný vliv rozpočtové strategie na všechny zvolené proměnné kromě počtu nedokončených závodů. Z výsledků lze usuzovat, že správná segmentace rozpočtu vede k lepšímu umístění stájí ve Formuli 1. Nejoptimálnějším způsobem zvýšení úspěšnosti jsou pak investice do výzkumu a vývoje. |

| Abstract: | The goal of this thesis is to analyze the impact of budget strategy on the success of Formula 1 constructors in the WCC Constructors' Championship. This thesis analyzes the standings and financial data from a total of eleven consecutive periods from 2010 to 2020. This is the period before the introduction of the budget ceiling. This is a natural experiment. This thesis demonstrates the positive influence of the budget strategy on the placement in the WCC championship, the number of points obtained and the frequency of placements on the podium. The motivation of constructors to achieve the best possible standing is explained by the success-related returns, both direct and indirect. The cost-benefit analysis method was used for the analysis, and the ordinary least squares models were created. The work serves as indicators of the success of placement in the WCC Championship, the number of points earned, the frequency of placements on the podium and the number of unfinished races. The results of the econometric models show a significant impact of the budget strategy on all selected variables except the number of unfinished races. The results suggest that proper budget segmentation leads to better placement of constructors in Formula 1. The most optimal way to increase success is to invest in research and development. |
