Intercultural communication in international relations. Case study: Israeli-Palestinian conflict

| Abstract: | Tato práce se zabývá mezikulturní komunikací a vyjednáváním v rámci Izraelsko-Palestinského konfliktu. Cílem práce je analýza, jakým způsobem mohou jednotlivá specifika kultur ovlivnit průběh mezikulturní komunikace a vyjednávání v rámci tohoto konfliktu. Vzhledem k cíli je práce rozdělena do dvou kapitol. První kapitola vymezuje teoretická východiska vzhledem k mezikulturní komunikaci a představuje obecně metodiku kulturních dimenzí dle Geerta Hofstedeho. Druhá kapitola se věnuje případové studii, kdy je provedena analýza kulturních odlišností Izraele a Palestiny na základě paradigmatických rysů a zároveň je na ně aplikována metodika kulturních dimenzí dle Geerta Hofstedeho. Následuje podrobnější rozbor dvou důležitých vyjednávání, která proběhla v rámci konfliktu a také analýza zapojených mediátorů a mezinárodních organizací. Tyto poznatky vedou k závěru, že je mezikulturní komunikace v rámci Izraelsko-Palestinského konfliktu neefektivní, především proto, že si obě strany odmítají připustit kulturní odlišnosti, které mezi nimi existují a obě strany zároveň nahlíží na druhou kulturu pouze objektivem své vlastní kultury. |

| Abstract: | The thesis deals with intercultural communication and negotiations within the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The aim is to to analyze how the individual specifics of cultures can affect the course of intercultural communication and negotiation within the conflict. With regard to the goal, the thesis is divided into two chapters. The first chapter defines the theoretical basis and presents the methodology of cultural dimensions in general according to Geert Hofstede. The second chapter deals with a case study, which analyzes the cultural differences of Israel and Palestine on the basis of paradigmatic features and at the same time applies the methodology of cultural dimensions according to Geert Hofstede. This is followed by a more detailed analysis of the two important negotiations that took place in the context of the conflict, as well as an analysis of the mediators and international organizations involved. These findings lead to the conclusion that intercultural communication in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is ineffective, mainly because both sides refuse to accept the cultural differences that exist between them and both sides view the other culture only through the lens of their own culture. |
