Abstract:

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is the analysis of a potentially nonlinear relationship between duration times of consecutive transactions of stock market and volatility, a statistical measure of the dispersion of returns for a specific security. Two contradictory hypothesis, that describe the relationship, are presented. In this thesis, a GARCH model and its exponential variant are presented and applied. The subject of the analysis is an observed high-frequency intraday data of Nasdaq and NYSE stock exchanges of a 3 month period. The data is cleaned of anomalies related to high frequency trading. In order to prove a hypothesis in favor of nonlinearity, four stocks are used as a representative sample. The best estimation for all four series of returns is the GARCH(1,1) model. Volatility was estimated by models that were tested by several statistical tests. To visualize a relationship between durations and volatility, a kernel smoothing and smoothing splines were used. On the basis of the empirical results it is possible to assume that the analyzed relationship is truly nonlinear.
