The impact of the Energiewende and the European Green Deal on German energy security

This bachelor thesis deals with the impact of the Energiewende and the European Green Deal on Germany's energy security. Therefore, the aim of the research will be to find out what impact these green policies have on Germany's current energy security and to outline further possible developments. The theoretical basis of the thesis is the concept of energy security and energy mix. In the application part, the Energiewende and Green Deal projects and legislations with their requirements for future energy policy are presented. Furthermore, Germany's energy mix and the role of natural gas in the German energy sector are analyzed. It was shown that due to the Energiewende's requirements for the energy mix and, as a result, the lack of diversification of natural gas imports as an established transitional source, the security of supply was threatened and thus significantly weakened energy security. Thus, Germany prioritized emission reductions and ideological convictions over sufficient strengthening of energy security. Both the Energiewende and the European Green Deal, given their climate neutrality targets and the high percentage of renewables in the energy mix, may negatively affect energy security. This is mainly due to underdeveloped technologies that are dependent on metals and minerals imported by a very small number of countries, so there may again be a risk of dependence on imports of these raw materials. There may also be a problem of security of supply, due to the high volatility and insufficient capacity of transmission networks.
