The Impact of institutional factors on the economic development of the former Eastern Bloc countries in the context of their accession to the European Union

| Abstract: | Práce zkoumá dynamiku vývoje institucionálního prostředí zemí bývalého východního bloku v kontextu jejich vstupu do Evropské unie a následně i vliv institucionálního prostředí na jejich ekonomický rozvoj. Tyto vztahy jsou zkoumány pro Česko, Slovensko, Maďarsko, Polsko, Lotyšsko, Litvu a Estonsko v období 1999-2009. V mé analýze je kvalita institucionálního prostředí vyjádřena třemi ukazateli: úrovní demokracie od Světové banky, mírou korupce od Transparency International a kvalitou regulatorního prostředí od Fraser Institute. Pro analýzu dynamiky vývoje institucionálního prostředí jsou sledovány relativní změny jednotlivých institucionálních ukazatelů, přičemž jednoznačný vývojový trend nebyl identifikován. Vliv institucionálního prostředí na ekonomický rozvoj byl zkoumán pomocí panelové regrese, kde kromě institucionálních ukazatelů jako vysvětlujících proměnných, vystupují i HDP per capita a HDI jako vysvětlované proměnné. Závěrem je identifikován statisticky významný pozitivní vztah úrovně demokracie a negativní vztah míry korupce vůči vysvětlovaným proměnným. Vztah kvality regulace a ekonomického rozvoje je vyhodnocen jako statisticky nevýznamný. |

| Abstract: | The thesis examines the development dynamics of the institutional environment of the former Eastern Bloc countries in the context of their accession to the European Union and subsequently also the impact of the institutional environment on their economic development. These relationships are examined for the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia over the period 1999-2009. In the analysis, the quality of institutional environment is expressed by three indicators: the level of democracy from the World Bank, the level of corruption from Transparency International and the quality of regulation from the Fraser Institute. To analyze the dynamics of the institutional environment, the relative changes of each institutional indicator are tracked, while no clear trend has been identified. The impact of the institutional environment on economic development was examined using panel regressions, where in addition to institutional indicators, GDP per capita and HDI function as dependent variables. Finally, a statistically significant positive relationship of the level of democracy and a negative relationship of the level of corruption to the dependent variables is identified. The relationship between regulatory quality and economic development is found to be statistically insignificant. |
