Pinochet's Social Policy and its Impact on Chile's Economy in the Years 1973-2022

This bachelor's thesis is focused on the analysis of the social policy during the government of Augusto Pinochet in the years 1973-1990 and its effects on the Chilean economy and society between the years 1990-2022. The work is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part, the method of literary research is used, which defined individual terms, such as social policy and authoritarian regimes, and the situation before Pinochet's rise to power and the period of his rule is outlined in this part. The practical part is mainly devoted to the method of analysis of research and analysis of social policy in the years 1973-1990 and specifically in the areas of the pension system, health system and education, and further this social policy until 2022. The overall analysis of Pinochet's social policy concludes that the reforms and, that were passed had a positive impact on the economy, as they helped reduce government spending on the pension system, increased its sustainability, and the resulting private pension funds began to form a significant portion of Chile’s GDP. In the field of healthcare and education, there were also positive changes after the introduction of reforms, such as a decrease in government spending, but after the return of democracy, new reforms were adopted, which increased government spending again. The resulting analysis, among other things, points to the problem of wide social gaps and inequality, which arose as a result of the adopted reforms.
