Internal and external economic stability of the USA during selected crises of the 20th century

This master thesis provides a detailed analysis of the internal and external stability of the United States during four key economic crises: the Great Depression (1929-1939), the oil shocks (1973; 1979-1980), the Great Recession (2007-2009), and the covid crisis (2020-2021). The aim of this paper is to provide a deeper understanding of the impact of these crises on economic indicators and to determine whether the covariance crisis was the deepest in terms of the aggregates studied since the Great Depression. The theoretical part uses an in-depth search of known literature and its subsequent interpretation in the form of the economic development of the United States during individual crises. It describes the causes, course, and impact of each crisis, as well as focuses on the government's response to contain the crisis. It also works with the direct method and is equally complemented by the indirect method. The practical part focuses to a significant extent on the analysis of selected crises from the perspective of external and internal stability. The data analysis selects data for the United States economy from various sources, particularly major American institutions. These sources are considered as primary sources for the practical part, while the secondary sources are scientific and academic articles and professional publications. The thesis then concludes by refuting the hypothesis of the thesis, as it has not been proven that the Covid crisis was the deepest crisis for the US since the Great Depression. Sub-questions are also answered that complement the results of the thesis and clearly demonstrate that, in terms of the indicators examined, the Great Recession remains the deepest crisis since the Great Depression.
