EU green policy as a political campaign tool ahead of the 2024 European Parliament elections

The EU's green policy has been increasingly debated in recent years and was therefore a very important electoral issue in the 2024 EP elections. This thesis examines how the EU's green policy issue was framed by six selected political parties in the election campaign. The first chapter introduces the framing theory, the second chapter outlines EU environmental policy including the flagship initiative European Green Deal and the third chapter analyses the framing of green policy by the selected parties. The thesis concludes that EU environmental policy has been framed very differently by the parties, with some seeing it as a huge opportunity and others as ideological nonsense. The anticipated impact of the pre-election framing of green policy is a partial polarisation of society and the need for significant reflection on the direction of EU green policy, particularly by the European Commission.
