Intergenerational differences in parenting approaches between the first and second generation of Vietnamese in the Czech Republic

This bachelor’s thesis explores intergenerational differences in parenting between the first and second generation of Vietnamese in the Czech Republic. It examines how cultural differences and the process of adaptation influence parenting methods, values, and family relationships within the Vietnamese community. The theoretical part of this thesis is based on Hofstede's typology of parenting. The research employs a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative and quantitative methods, including interviews with Vietnamese parents from the first and second generations and a survey that maps the second generation’s views on parenting and values. The thesis focuses on the extent to which Czech society influences traditional Vietnamese parenting approaches and how the Vietnamese community manages to preserve its traditions and cultural heritage in a new environment. It also addresses the challenges faced by the second generation of Vietnamese, often referred to as “banana children,” in their search for identity between two distinct cultures. The findings of the thesis provide a deeper understanding of the dynamics of Vietnamese families in the Czech Republic and contribute to a broader comprehension of the integration process of minorities into the majority society.
