The Role of Business Glossaries and Data Dictionaries in the Implementation of Data Governance

The thesis is focused on implementation of business glossaries and data dictionaries within the concept of data governance in BNP Paribas Cardif. The aim of the thesis is to document the entire implementation process - from initial analysis and design to practical implementation - and to offer actionable recommendations to address the human, technical and process challenges associated with this type of project. It combines theoretical knowledge in the field of data governance with a real project in a specific corporate environment. The theoretical part provides an overview of the key areas of data governance and the prerequisites for implementing good data governance. The practical part describes the individual steps of implementation, including the design of the documentation structure, the creation of business term definitions and the mapping between application and business data. The deliverable includes a functional business glossary and data dictionary complemented by a proposal for further development and identification of the main barriers, including a brief reflection on the use of artificial intelligence tools to bridge human barriers. The work focuses in particular on the human and process components of data governance, which are often neglected in practice. The result is a document that can serve as a clear reference for other organizations or individuals facing the implementation of data governance, both in terms of theory and practical implementation.
