Catalan independence from the perspective of the European Union

This bachelor’s thesis explores the issue of Catalan independence from the perspective of the institutions of the European Union. The primary aim is to provide a comprehensive insight into the complex matter of Catalonia's independence in relation to EU institutions, as well as to systematically analyze the positions and responses of these bodies, with particular emphasis on legal and political dimensions. The theoretical framework is based on both explanatory and normative theories of secession, which offer a lens through which to understand the causes and legitimacy of secessionist claims. The thesis employs a single-case study approach combined with qualitative content analysis of official EU documents and statements made by representatives of the European Union. It also addresses the legal framework surrounding the potential membership of a newly established state within the EU. The findings indicate that the European Union has adopted a cautious stance towards the issue of Catalan independence, grounded in a commitment to the territorial integrity of its member states and the limited scope of its competencies in matters of domestic political conflict. This thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of the European Union as an actor in the context of internal political crises.
