Gender Barriers to Startup Financing in the Czech Republic: The Perspective of Women Founders

Startups led by women are often the subject of discussion in relation to gender barriers in securing funding. This thesis examines whether startups co-founded by women face specific obstacles when raising capital in the Czech market. The theoretical part focuses on funding options for startups, gender aspects within the financial ecosystem, and the influence of signaling theory on investor decision-making. The practical part employs qualitative research in the form of semi-structured interviews with female startup founders. The results suggest that although theoretical assumptions point to the existence of gender barriers, the respondents did not report that their gender posed an obstacle in obtaining funding. Thus, the thesis offers a new perspective on the perception of gender aspects in the startup environment and reflects on potential differences between theoretical assumptions and practical reality.

Startupy vedené ženami jsou často předmětem diskuse v souvislosti s genderovými bariérami při získávání financování. Tato diplomová práce zkoumá, zda startupy, jejichž spoluzakladatelkou je žena, čelí specifickým překážkám při získávání kapitálu na českém trhu. Teoretická část se věnuje možnostem financování startupů, genderovým aspektům ve finančním ekosystému a vlivu teorie signalizace na rozhodování investorů. Praktická část využívá kvalitativní výzkum ve formě polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se zakladatelkami startupů. Výsledky naznačují, že přestože teoretické předpoklady poukazují na existenci genderových bariér, respondentky ve svých zkušenostech neuváděly, že by jejich pohlaví bylo překážkou při získávání financování. Práce tak přináší nový pohled na vnímání genderových aspektů ve startupovém prostředí a reflektuje možné rozdíly mezi teoretickými východisky a praktickou realitou.
