The Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Mathematics Lessons at the Lower Secondary Level of Primary Schools

The bachelor thesis deals with the comparison of the use of mathematical applications in the lower secondary level of selected primary schools in Pardubice and Praha. The author aims to compile a guide for teachers and pupils with recommended selected applications that could be used in teaching mathematics and that could contribute to increasing the effectiveness and attractiveness of teaching. Another goal was to find out and compare whether teachers and pupils in these cities use or do not use digital tools in math lessons. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on a literature research and documents of The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport. This is followed by a chapter of analysis of available educational mathematics applications. In the empirical part, the author applies a combination of methods – guided interviews with teachers, questionnaire surveys among pupils, direct observation of teaching and comparison of results between the participating schools. The main output of the thesis is a practical guide for mathematics teachers, which clearly and comprehensibly presents selected digital applications for use in teaching. It is divided into three categories: geometric and graphical applications, online platforms, and other tools. For each application, it offers a brief description and a QR code for easy access to further information. Data analysis shows that mathematical applications are not commonly used in the schools surveyed. Teachers perceive them as a supplement to teaching rather than a substitute. While at the Pardubice school a computer with a projector is commonly used at least for presenting the curriculum, at the Prague school digital technologies are minimally used in mathematics teaching, only for practicing during substitute lessons. School management and pupils perceive ICT as a natural part of teaching, but its use is limited to the projection of materials.
