Labour market analysis of professional athletes in the Czech Republic in 2005–2024 with a focus on the superstar phenomenon in tennis

The bachelor thesis examines the financial analysis of raising a tennis superstar in the Czech Republic between the years 2005 and 2024. The aim of the thesis is to determine the total costs associated with long-term athletic development, tournament participation, and other expenses that must be incurred throughout the career progression of a young male player striving to reach the professional level. The theoretical part introduces key concepts such as the superstar phenomenon, human capital theory, and the specific characteristics of the professional sports labor market. ​The empirical section is based on interviews and publicly available data, such as price lists from tennis clubs, accommodation costs, transportation expenses, and tournament entry fees. It presents a detailed breakdown of expenditures across different age categories, compiled from the real-life career paths of promising players from the Czech Republic. The findings show that the total cost of developing a single player can exceed CZK 4.5 million, with the largest share attributed to training expenses, followed by travel and tournament fees. All analyses were conducted in constant prices, with no discounting applied. The study also highlights the significant financial demands associated with a sports career and emphasizes the need for systematic planning and funding throughout the entire developmental path of the player.
