Media Representation of Climate Change: A Case Study of Selected Czech Media with Regard to the Influence of the European Green Deal

This thesis examines the media representation of climate change in 2024 in three selected Czech online news platforms – ČT24.cz, iDNES.cz, and Novinky.cz. The aim is to explore how these media represent climate change and what role the European Green Deal plays in this context, whether it is portrayed as a tool for addressing climate change or presented as a separate topic. The theoretical part focuses on the role of the media in shaping public understanding of reality, drawing on the concepts of social constructivism and media framing. The methodological section outlines the sampling strategy, analytical categories, and coding procedure. The thesis applies quantitative content analysis and frame analysis to identify significant trends in the media representation of climate change. The analytical chapters examine the research findings, identify dominant frames, analyze how climate change and the European Green Deal are interconnected, and trace the overall development of the media representation. The results show climate change is most frequently presented as a scientifically grounded issue requiring systemic solutions. Its connection to the European Green Deal is not consistent. Where such a link is established, the media representation of climate change changes significantly – the perceived urgency diminishes. At the same time, greater attention is paid to the political and economic dimensions of the European Green Deal.
