Visitor management in Prague 1

Prague 1, one of the most tourist-exposed districts in the Czech Republic, has long faced significant challenges associated with mass tourism. This thesis aims to examine the current regulatory instruments of visitor management, assess how they are perceived by local residents and business owners, and identify areas with potential for improvement. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining a questionnaire survey of 107 respondents with a thematic analysis of open-ended responses based on the Braun and Clarke framework. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to capture prevailing attitudes among key local stakeholders. Among the most frequently reported issues were noise, overcrowded public spaces, and unregulated short-term rentals. While measures such as the public alcohol consumption ban are seen as relatively effective, educational campaigns like “Enjoy Respect Prague” are often viewed as insufficiently visible and impactful. The thesis concludes with recommendations to strengthen enforcement, improve communication by local authorities, and adapt visitor management tools to better reflect the unique context of Prague’s historic city center.
