| Abstract: | Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje jinakosti, která existuje nejen ve skutečných mezinárodních vztazích, ale vstupuje i do populární kultury, například seriálů. Širší kontext práce poskytují teoretická zjištění o vztazích populární kultury a mezinárodních vztahů. Teoretické ukotvení práce je tvořeno konceptem jinakosti, teorií orientalismu a dalších konceptů, které ji rozšiřují jako subalterní skupiny a mimikry. Práce používá multimodální metodu, která pomocí modů analyzuje jednotlivé epizody seriálu. Cílem práce je zjistit, jakým způsobem je jinakost zobrazována na případové studii seriálu Stargate Atlantis. Výrazně se projevuje teorie orientalismu postavená na dominanci Západu nad Orientem a rozdělení skupin na subalterní a elity. Jinakost je prezentována na základě vytváření hranic pomocí rozdílů a odlišností. |

| Abstract: | This bachelor’s thesis aims to address the concept of othering, which not only affects international relations but also intervenes in pop culture, e.g., TV series. The general context for this thesis considers the relations between pop culture and international relations. The theoretical part consists of the theory of orientalism and the concept of othering, featuring works rooted in this theory, such as subaltern communities or mimicry. The multimodal method, implementing modes to analyse each episode in the TV series Stargate Atlantis, is applied to investigate and interpret how the process of othering is being represented. The theory of orientalism, based on the presumption of the West dominating the Orient, is detected to be significant, as well as the differentiation of elites and subaltern communities. The process of othering has proven to be presented through a production of dividing lines using distinctions and dissimilarities. |
