It sets 2 main objectives, the first is to examine available data on railway transport and to evaluate them in terms of requirements for statistical data and to assess their shortcomings and find room for improvement. The second objective is to evaluate the European railway network in terms of published data and to compare individual indicators across European states, especially the European Union states. Within the framework of individual indicators, their interdependence and their possible interconnection with economic or other factors are also examined. The work is based primarily on data from Eurostat as the main organization of the European Union dealing with the collection and processing of statistical data and also on data published by the OECD, the organization for economic cooperation and development. Data from the Czech Statistical Office are also partly used. The Eurostat data are found to be of somewhat better quality during the work, better meet the individual requirements for statistical data, on the other hand, the OECD database offers some interesting data that Eurostat does not publish. From the findings found from the data itself, we can name, for example, in the European Union the volume of rail freight transport is not yet very high (except in this specific Baltic states) or that infrastructure factors such as the density of the railway network or the level of electrification influence the use of rail transport more in passenger than in freight transport, or that accidents on the railway are closely related to the economic power of the state. |
