In recent years, sustainability has become an increasingly frequent topic and festivals in general tend to improve their ecological footprint. We are mainly talking about waste reduction, the use of more environmentally friendly materials, changes in festival location for the sake of nature protection or environmental education of visitors. Themes of recycling, upcycling and waste sorting are increasingly appearing in the festival programme. The thesis includes a mapping of the different steps festival organisations are taking towards a greener existence. By comparing respondents' answers regarding the adaptation of festivals to the trend of greener functioning, their motivation for such behaviour is investigated. Shortcomings, possible causes and solutions that would lead to an improvement of the festival's environmental impact are explored. Mostly the work focuses on three main motivational pillars: marketing, corporate social responsibility, and financial situation. The introduction of innovative environmental solutions is an economically challenging issue, both for large festivals of ten thousand people and for smaller local ones. This paper describes what opportunities a festival has in terms of financial support, what chances it has to receive public funding for its environmentally sustainable projects, how a festival can use its sustainable actions to promote itself, and what a festival does for its surroundings in terms of corporate social responsibility. The aim of this paper is to find the main motivational pillars for organisers to organise festivals in an environmentally sustainable way. |
